While riding a commuter train, trapped between a moist armpit and old man breath, filled head to toe with stress, have you ever suddenly wished you were sat on a beach with no worries aside from choosing your next cocktail?

You may not be able to transport yourself to that beach, but you can rid yourself of unnecessary stress with the spiritual help of Reiki.

Reiki was created by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui, who developed the alternate form of healing in 1922.  To reduce stress and promote relaxation, Reiki is delivered through a hands-on technique that transfers energy from the practitioner to the client. Bad energy is dispensed as energy blocks in the body are dissipated, facilitating a healthy re-balancing of the body’s chakras. While it is not a religion, many use Reiki as a means for spiritual growth.

The practice has many followers who believe that it significantly impacts their mental and, although it does not have empirical support, physical health. Reiki is said to aid the immune system, triggering better sleeping patterns and a healthier body.  Many also claim that the practice relieved them of headache symptoms, insomnia, menopause, and many more bodily ills. The practitioner acts as a conduit for energy, between the universe and the recipient. Recipients generally feel relaxed during a treatment, gaining a sense of peace. Sometimes, they may even feel sensations of heat, tingling or have an emotional response to the Reiki.A Reiki session is approximately 45-60 minutes long. The first stage is a scanning of the client’s body, who is lying down on their back, with Reiki (the practitioner’s energy), to identify areas of blocked energy. Some practitioners will look for hot and cold spots, or repelling and attracting energy points that they will later focus on. This is followed by a hands-on sequence that targets a client’s chakras to aid the flowing of energy, which should improve any ailments the client may have. Next, the practitioner will stand back from the client to beam Reiki to the client’s aura. After a few moments, the practitioner will sweep the client’s aura with Reiki to remove residual bad energy. Finally, the practitioner returns to the head of the client to seal the healing, with a hand hovering over the head and chest area.
